Miami-Dade County's top high school musicians will perform with the
New World Symphony in a free public concert at 7 p.m. April 3 in the
Lincoln Theatre, 541 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach.
More than 100 students from 10 public and private high schools will
participate in the fifth annual "Side-By-Side" concert held by the
New World Symphony. To be led by Michael Tilson Thomas, the concert's
program will include Beethovan's "Egmont Overture," Liszt's
"Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2," the adagio movement from Piston's
"Symphony No. 2," and "Jupiter" from Holst's "The Planets."
A concert highlight will be a performance of Bach's "Concerto for
Viola in C Minor" by New World School of the Arts sophomore Dawn
Smith, winner of the school's concerto competition.
The annual concerts with high school musicians are an outgrowth of
the New World Symphony's "music mentor" program, which provides
individual and small group instruction to local students along with
free admission to Lincoln Theatre concerts.
