March 20, 2001
Miami-Dade County Public Schools' Division of Mathematics and Science
will hold its annual engineering competition Saturday, March 24, from
8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., at G. Holmes Braddock Senior High School, 3601
S.W. 147 Ave. The SECME (Science Engineering Communication
Mathematics Enhancement) District Olympiad will offer students from
more than 50 secondary schools the chance to compete in 10
events.
Student teams will test basswood bridges for structural efficiency;
containers will be engineered to maintain the contents, a raw egg,
intact after it is hoisted and dropped from initial heights of 50
feet; cars powered solely by a mousetrap spring will race across the
gymnasium floor; and water bottle rockets will be launched with the
anticipation of maintaining a maximum hang time. Students will have
the opportunity to participate in several interactive workshops on
graphing calculators, SAT preparation, cryognics and kite flying.
SECME's goal is to encourage students, especially minorities, to
pursue degrees in engineering, mathematics, science and technology.
Students experience mathematics and science through hands-on
designing, building and testing a variety of engineering projects.
They also meet practicing engineers and learn about their careers to
help them understand the importance of mathematics and science in the
community.

Director, Division of Mathematics and Science, at 305-995-1905.
