The number of 10th-grade Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) students taking the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) increased considerably during 2000, as a result of a partnership between the state of Florida and the College Board to provide the opportunity for more students to participate in the test. The PSAT is used for practice for the SAT and also helps students win scholarships and academic recognition.

A summary provided by The College Board noted the following figures:

• Of all M-DCPS 10th-grade students, 45.8 percent participated in the October 2000 administration of the test, a 33.5 percent increase from last year.
• Of 10th-grade Black and Hispanic students, 40.1 percent participated in the October 2000 administration of the test, a 30.5 percent increase over last year. This is significant because these groups were under-represented in previous years.
• Mast Academy had the highest percentage of students participate, with 98.6 percent.
