Seven Miami-Dade County Public Schools teachers will vie for the title of Rookie Teacher of the Year at a 7 p.m. ceremony this evening at the Radisson Mart Plaza Hotel/Convention Center, 711 N.W. 72 Ave.

Finalists in the competition include:

• Chasity Daugherty, Palm Springs North Elementary School
• Dannette Atencio, Crestview Elementary School
• Monica Nicole Santa, Everglades Elementary School
• Goldie Lisa Washington, Booker T. Washington Senior High School
• Esther Hoffman-Gonzalez, Wesley Matthews Elementary School
• Carlos A. Escobar, Felix Varela Senior High School
• Constance Gilbert, Dorothy M. Wallace C.O.P.E. Center

A 6 p.m. auction to raise money for scholarships will precedethe ceremony.

Sponsors of the event are Velda Farms, Barry University, Miami-Dade County Public Schools and United Teachers of Dade.
