The fourth annual Laura C. Saunders Elementary Chess Challenge will be held at Gameworks in the Shops at Sunset Place, 5701 Sunset Drive, South Miami, on Friday, April 20, from 10 a.m. till noon. Prizes will be awarded at a lunch from 12-1 p.m.

Saunders students will compete against players from Vineland Elementary School. Prizes were donated by more than 20 companies and individuals including Gloria Estefan, Britney Spears, Home Depot, Excalibur Electronics, Brookstone, Old Navy, Virgin Megastore, Barnes and Noble and Radio Disney.

The Saunders team will display its one-of-a-kind, life-size, hand-made chess set that took more than nine months and 40 students to create. Chess has been recognized as a builder of self-esteem and problem solving and critical thinking skills in children.
