Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) will host a major national conference on Instructional Leadership in Education, March 1-3, at the Miami Airport Hilton, 5101 Blue Lagoon Drive. The workshop is sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Urban Systemic Program Superintendent's Coalition, which is co-chaired by M-DCPS Superintendent of Schools Roger C. Cuevas.

The conference focuses on mathematics, science and technology, areas that show tremendous economic growth and that face increased public accountability. Representatives of all 65 NSF-funded urban school districts have been invited to participate in the conference.

“The need for students to excel in math and science is crucial to their future success,” said Cuevas. “Our technology-driven economy demands a workforce that is knowledgeable in these critical areas. That is why this national conference is of such importance.”

Conference highlights include:

• Dr. William Schmidt, renowned expert on the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) will lead a dialogue on moving toward World Class Standards at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 1.
• An overview of M-DCPS at 7:45 p.m. on Thursday, March 1.
• A Town-Hall Meeting and panel discussion addressing recommendations of The National Commission on Mathematics and Science Teaching for the 21st Century (the Glenn Commission), at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 2.
• A reception and dinner at Vizcaya, at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 2.
