MIAMI-DADE PUBLIC SCHOOLS' STUDENTS
TAKE FIRST PLACE IN NATIONAL COMPETITION

August 6, 2001

Mousetrap-powered vehicles designed and built by an all-female student team from Miami-Palmetto Senior High School and a team from George W. Carver Middle School took first place in their races at the annual competition held by SECME, Science Engineering Communication Mathematics Enhancement.

Along with the first-place team winners, Angel Alvarez, a student at Miami Springs Senior High School, won the poster design contest for SECME's 25th Annual National Summer Institute in Tucson, Arizona.

The annual institute is held for teachers, parents and students. Thirty-five of the 300 teachers participating were from Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Twelve of those were among the 88 teachers who took part in the organization's leadership academy.
