SUNTRUST/THUMBS UP PROGRAM TO SALUTE EXCEPTIONAL STUDENTS

Miami-Dade County Public Schools and SunTrust/Miami, N.A. will sponsor the 13th annual "Thumbs Up" awards ceremony at 9:30 a.m on Wednesday, May 9 at the Radisson Mart Centre, 777 N.W. 72 Ave.

The keynote speaker will be Suzanne Diamond, who overcame her learning disabilities and is currently a doctoral student specializing in special education at the University of Miami.

"Thumbs Up" is a motivational program in elementary and secondary schools that encourages students with learning disabilities to aim toward higher academic achievement and improved behavior.

Certificates of recognition and medals will be awarded at the program to students who have made significant progress during the school year. The "Top Gun Award" will be presented to two exemplary students, one from an elementary school and the other from a middle or high school. Additionally, each Top Gun Award-winner's school will receive a complete computer system.
