Miami-Dade County Public Schools honored Janis Klein-Young as its most outstanding teacher last night at the Francisco R. Walker Golden Apple Teacher of the Year Ceremony held at the Radisson Mart Plaza Hotel/Convention Center. Klein-Young teaches art to alternative education students at Miami Douglas MacArthur South Senior High School.

As the winner of the contest, Klein-Young received $7,000 and the Golden Apple Award. Her school received $2,000.

Deborah Hibbitt, an English teacher at Miami Springs Senior High School, was runner-up. She received $2,500.

Five other finalists each received $1,500. They are:

• Maria Leon Cosio, Joella C. Good Elementary School
• Manuel Quiroga, Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School
• Karen Sutton, MAST Academy
• Eugenie Dunn, Miami Killian Senior High School
• Daryl Clark, Coral Reef Senior High School

Corporate sponsor of the event was HIP Health Plan of Florida, one of the country's largest HMOs with more than 50 years of experience. Additional sponsors include Miami-Dade County Public Schools and United Teachers of Dade.
