MIAMI PALMETTO HIGH STUDENT NAMED ‘OUTSTANDING YOUTH’ BY UNITED WAY

July 3, 2001

Six years ago, Ian Amber, a student at Miami Palmetto Senior High School, was diagnosed with leukemia and went through three years of chemotherapy. Today he's a healthy, energetic, straight-A student and founder of the Kids That Care Pediatric and Cancer Fund.

The only kid-run organization affiliated with the Jackson Memorial Foundation, Kids That Care provides toys for Jackson's pediatric cancer clinic, counseling, family events, patient outings and many more services.

Ian plays an active role in all the services as well as provides emotional support to the children. He has volunteered several thousand hours and raised over $100,000 in donations.

Recently, the United Way of Miami-Dade honored Ian with the Derrick Thomas Outstanding Youth Award at its annual meeting and awards ceremony.

The United Way also recognized several individuals for their outstanding community service. Among them was Linda D. Brown, Executive Director of the Bureau of Community Services, who led the effort in establishing a new shelter for battered women and their children called, "Inn Transition." President of the Junior Orange Bowl Committee, Brown also is a volunteer with the Humane Shelter of Greater Miami.

For more information, contact Diana Venturini, Supervisor, Bureau of Community Services, at 305-995-1215.
