Miami-Dade County Public Schools recognized 279 schools that exceeded their United Way fund-raising goals at a luncheon at Signature Gardens yesterday. M-DCPS students raised more than $600,000 and retained the title of number one school district in the nation for United Way contributions.

Schools were recognized within their school level for raising the highest percentage of their goal, the greatest amount of money, or both.

The overall national champion school was Martin Luther King Elementary which turned in 1006 percent of its goal.

Other national winners include:

• Whispering Pines Elementary School (796 percent)
• Richmond Heights Middle School (435 percent)
• Design and Architecture Senior High School (329 percent)
• Coral Reef Senior High School (303 percent)
• Corporate Academy South (1169 percent)
• Ruth Owens Kruse Educational Center (288 percent)
• Miami Springs Technical Education Center (241 percent)
• D.A. Dorsey Educational Center (445 percent)

County champions include:

• Pinecrest Elementary School (792 percent)
• Jack D. Gordon Elementary School ($10,496.14)
• Miami Lakes Middle School (394 percent)
• Howard D. McMillan Middle School ($6,370.37)
• Miami Lakes Technical Senior High School (231 percent and $791.41)
• Southwest Miami Senior High (196 percent)
• Miami Southridge Senior High ($7,558.29)
• School for Applied Technology (831 percent and $1,047.56)
• Robert Renick Educational Center (107 percent and $217.41)
• Miami Jackson Adult (239 percent)
• Miami Senior Adult Center ($2,010.93)
• The English Center (295 percent and $10,314.80)
