M-DCPS STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN WORLDLINK 2001, OCT.
23-24
September 21, 2001
In response to the national tragedy of September 11th,
thousands of Miami-Dade County public school students will
participate in a 24-hour global peace initiative titled
"Worldlink 2001: A Cyberpeace Summit," Oct. 23-24. The
summit's local center of operations will be Dr. Michael M.
Krop Senior High School, located at 1410 N.E. 215 St. The
summit is an opportunity for students from more than 100
nations to discuss global issues, seek solutions and foster
international cooperation.
"While the tragedy hit our country the most, more than 80
nations suffered the loss of citizens," said Dr. Michael M.
Krop, School Board Vice Chair and Honorary Chair of
Worldlink 2001. "Our students have seen the need to reach
out to their counterparts, especially in those
countries."
Through video conferences and cyber chatrooms, students will
have the opportunity to connect with students across the
world to discuss global issues and concerns regarding their
collective future.
Featured activities will include a world-wide chorus video
conference that will link students in a song for
international peace and a global leadership round table that
will allow students to interact with world leaders.
Additional programs for "cybernauts" include a student
Summit of the Americas, a peace-through-tourism conference,
a film initiative focusing on HIV/AIDS, workshops on
wireless communications and on the devastating effects of
war on children.
The Worldlink program is a development of the Snowdon
Cyberschool of International Diplomacy, based in Miami.
"It's a fragile world our students are living in. They need
an interactive forum to communicate. The Internet, at its
best, offers students a world without borders," said
Worldlink Director Sondra Snowdon.
The summit is held in cooperation with Nova Southeastern
University, Aventura Marketing Council, and the Office of
the Mayor of Miami-Dade County, Alex Penelas.
