ACT-SO ACADEMIC COMPETITION SCHEDULED FOR FEBRUARY 9

January 31, 2002

The annual ACT-SO (Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics) academic competition will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9, at the historic Booker T. Washington Senior High School, 1200 N.W. 6th Ave., Miami.

Themed as "An Olympics of the Mind," ACT-SO is a year-long enrichment program designed to recruit, stimulate, improve and encourage African-American high school students. The competition promotes excellence by recognizing and celebrating students' high academic and cultural achievements. Categories include natural and physical sciences, humanities, performing and visual arts, and business/finance/economics via entrepreneurship.

ACT-SO provides a national forum for a learning experience in which scholarships and prizes are awarded and students develop new skills and greatly enhance their academic abilities.

Founded in 1978 by renowned author and journalist Vernon Jarrett, ACT-SO is a major youth initiative of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Since its inception 25 years ago, Miami-Dade has won 47 national medals, more than any other single school district in the nation.
