May 17, 2002

Winners in more than 26 different categories will be awarded bronze, silver and gold medals in the Showcase of the 2002 ACT-SO (Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics) to be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, at the historic Lyric Theater, 819 N.W. 2nd Ave., Miami.

Themed as "An Olympics of the Mind," ACT-SO is a year-long enrichment program designed to recruit, stimulate, improve and encourage African-American high school students. The competition promotes excellence by recognizing and celebrating students' high academic and cultural achievements. Categories include natural and physical sciences, humanities, performing and visual arts, and business/finance/economics via entrepreneurship.

ACT-SO provides a national forum for a learning experience in which scholarships and prizes are awarded and students develop new skills.

Founded in 1978 by renowned author and journalist Vernon Jarrett, ACT-SO is a major youth initiative of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Since the inception of ACT-SO 25 years ago, Miami-Dade has won 47 national medals, more than any other single school district in the nation.
