ADVANCED PLACEMENT NUMBERS SOAR

Sept. 4, 2002

Miami-Dade County Public Schools' (M-DCPS) Advanced Placement (AP) students made tremendous strides during the 2001 &endash; 2002 school year. Data recently released by the Educational Testing Service reflect increased student participation in AP classes and increased success on the May 2002 administration of AP examinations.

Last May, more than 8,800 M-DCPS students took 16,234 AP examinations at 37 school sites. The increase in student participation from the previous year is approximately 16 percent. Scores of 3, 4, or 5, which are generally accepted for credit by most colleges and universities, were awarded to 50 percent of all tests taken. This is a 1.6 percent increase in the percentage of students passing the AP exams from the previous year. Notably, Florida's percentage of passing scores only increased by .5 percent; thus, the traditional achievement gap between M-DCPS students and those throughout the rest of the state has decreased.

The school district has made a concerted effort to increase the participation and success of traditionally under-represented students in advanced academic classes such as AP. The number of African-American students enrolled in AP classes during the 2001-2002 school year increased approximately 19 percent from the previous year, and the number of Hispanic students increased approximately 22 percent. Significantly, the number of passing scores (3 - 5) on the May 2002 AP exams increased approximately 37 percent for African-American students and 22 percent for Hispanic students from the previous year. The total number of AP tests taken by the District's students was up for the eighth consecutive year.

Five Year Score and Population Comparison - Advanced Placement

Overview: Providing college level courses for senior high school students

Advanced Placement (AP) courses provide a college experience to students while they are still in high school. Created by The College Board, AP programs are offered in each major academic area. Students learn in seminar situations, search for competency via the Socratic method, develop sophisticated communication and computation skills, work on tasks that reflect real world concern, and leave high school with academic abilities that merit college/university credit.
