CRUISE INDUSTRY TO GIVE $100,000 FOR
COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS CICF will
present the donation to Superintendent of Schools Merrett R.
Stierheim and FPCF Chairman Stanley Tate. Congresswoman
Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, a former schoolteacher who supports
expanded educational opportunities for youth, will help
commemorate this special occasion. "As an
industry, we are committed to supporting the local community
and are proud to facilitate this new partnership between
FPCF and Miami-Dade County Public Schools. The cruise
industry is investing in the futures of Miami-Dade County
youth by creating this new college scholarship fund," said
Jim Border, CICF Chairman and Carnival Corporation vice
president. "Miami-Dade
County Public Schools is committed to preparing its students
for graduation, employment and postsecondary education so
that they become responsible citizens of this nation," said
Stierheim. "This program is yet another example of how
public private partnerships can work to benefit our most
important priority, our students." The Florida
Prepaid College Foundation, founded in l989, has provided
more than 15,000 tuition and local fee college scholarships
totalling more than $52 million to economically
disadvantaged students in Florida. To maximize the impact
of the cruise industry donation, FPCP will provide a
dollar-for-dollar match so that a total of $200,000 will be
available to provide full-paid college scholarships for
qualified high school seniors. "The success
of the Florida Prepaid College Foundation is attributed to a
strong, cooperative network of elected officials, schools
and businesses. Together, we are providing many of our
children with one of the most treasured experiences in life,
a college education," said Stanley Tate, Chairman of the
Florida Prepaid College Foundation. A luncheon
commemorating this special event will be hosted on board
Royal Caribbean's Majesty of the Seas following the grant
presentation ceremony. ### 02-MV/285/JJS
