SEASON'S READINGS
SUPT. ANNOUNCES DECEMBER’S BOOKS OF THE MONTH

November 27, 2002

Miami-Dade's Superintendent of Schools Merrett R. Stierheim announced December's Books of the Month today, in conjunction with the school district's successful JUST READ campaign to encourage reading.

"Join me in celebrating this holiday season by reading with a child," Stierheim said. "Our December selections are quality reading materials that young readers and their families can read together during the holidays. Be on the lookout for new reading selections to be announced each month to keep student reading momentum going."

Recommended by the district's reading teachers and media specialists, these selections are to hone reading skills at various grade levels. December's selections are:

THEME: CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

Kindergarten - Grade 2

Sometimes I'm Bombaloo by Rachel Vail

Grade 3 - Grade 5

Suitcase by Mildred Pitts Walker

Middle School

Shizuko's Daughter by Kyoko Mori

Senior High/Adult

Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier

Multilingual Selection

El burrito que quería ser azul by Hilda Perera

The Books of the Month and JUST READ are part of the School Board's Comprehensive Reading Plan implemented in 1998 to ensure all students read at grade level by grade 3. Improved student test scores in reading comprehension prompted the Board to expand the plan in 2001 for another three years and to enhance it with an ambitious reading intervention program to some middle schools and high schools.

December's Books of the Month, as well as reading tips for students and parents, can be accessed online at the district's reading website
