WLRN-TV TO AIR FCAT SPECIAL

June 11, 2002

WLRN-TV presents "Education Update: FCAT Facts," a one-hour special about the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) on Wednesday, June 12, at 8 p.m.
|
The program is designed to help parents understand FCAT scores and how they can use results to help their children improve academically. WTVJ Channel 6 Education Reporter Ed O'Dell moderates a panel of experts including Merrett R. Stierheim, Dr. Frank Till, and Michael Lannon, the superintendents of the Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe county school districts, respectively.

Discussion includes the stress placed on children by the test, the stigma of poor test results, the impact of poverty, whether teachers should be "teaching to the test," and how test results can affect property values. Additionally, the importance of parental action in applying for opportunity scholarships, or tuition vouchers, is addressed.

The show re-airs on Friday, June 14, at 11 p.m., and Sunday, June 16, at noon.
