SUPT. ANNOUNCES FEBRUARY’S BOOKS OF THE MONTH

January 30, 2002

Superintendent of Schools Merrett R. Stierheim today announced February's Books of the Month, in conjunction with the school district's successful JUST READ campaign to encourage reading.

"Our monthly selections are quality reading materials that young readers and their families can read throughout the year," said Stierheim.

Recommended by the district's reading and media specialists, these selections are to hone reading skills at various grade levels and are ideal for parents and children to read together. February's selections are:

FEBRUARY'S THEME - CHARACTER EDUCATION

Kindergarten - Grade 2

Enemy Pie by Derek Munson

Grade 3 - Grade 5

Teacher's Pet by Johanna Hurwitz

Middle School

Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick

Senior High/Adult

Parrot in the Oven: mi vida by Victor Martinez

Multilingual Selection

Fanmi Konte by Lada Josefa Kratky (Haitian-Creole, K-Grade 2)

The Books of the Month and JUST READ are part of the School Board's Comprehensive Reading Plan implemented in 1998 to ensure all students read at grade level by grade 3.

Recent successes, such as the district's 10-point increase in the third-grade reading comprehension median percentile score on the Stanford Achievement Test, prompted the Board to expand the plan another three years.

February's Books of the Month, as well as reading tips for students and parents, can be accessed online at the district's reading website at
