GLORIA FLOYD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS TO ATTEND
ALTERNATE SCHOOLS FOLLOWING EARLY MORNING FIRE

June 7, 2002

Due to a fire that occurred before the start of school today, students from Gloria Floyd Elementary School, 12650 S.W. 109 Ave., will attend alternate schools. A shuttle system of buses was arranged to transport students to Leewood Elementary School, 10343 S.W. 124 St., William H. Lehman Elementary School, 10990 S.W. 113 Place, and Devon Aire Elementary School, 10501 S.W. 122 Ave. Arrangements have been made to avoid any disruption in food service.

The school district will determine by this afternoon if students and teachers can return to the school on Monday. Some students were kept at home by parents who received early news reports of the fire; they will receive excused absences.

The fire did extensive damage to a computer/media room even though the fire department responded quickly and had the fire under control soon after. The suspected cause of the fire is overheated electrical equipment. Gloria Floyd Elementary has 820 students and a staff of 70.
