FOODSERVICE COORDINATOR RECEIVES NATIONAL AWARD

January 22, 2002

Carol Chong, a Miami-Dade County Public Schools district coordinator for marketing, nutrition education and staff development has received the Foodservice Achievement Management Excellence (FAME) Rising Star Award. She received the award for demonstrating outstanding leadership skills and motivating and educating a variety of audiences toward health and wellness via nutrition practices at the annual Industry and Technology Conference of the American School Food Service Association (ASFCA) held recently in New Mexico.

Chong's dedication to school foodservice is illustrated through educational programs and grant solicitation that benefit students, teachers and the community. She was instrumental in the implementation of a partnership class at Florida International University titled 'Partners in Education...from the Cafeteria to the Classroom," in which teachers and cafeteria managers facilitate nutrition education programs and work together as partners. Under her leadership, the school district was awarded a "Schools as Community Kitchens" pilot program grant from the School Food Service Foundation. Chong also facilitates annual participation in the ASFSA's NAC Art Contest, which promotes the concept of nutrition into art.

To serve the community and showcase principals, teachers, students, local experts and school foodservice programs, she developed, produced, and directed a 12-part cable television series titled "Take Time...for the Health of It!" As an additional community outreach activity, Chong makes presentations at various local and state professional meetings.
