SUPT. ANNOUNCES JANUARY’S BOOKS OF THE MONTH

January 8, 2002

Superintendent of Schools Merrett R. Stierheim today announced January's Books of the Month, in conjunction with the school district's successful JUST READ campaign to encourage reading.

"There's no better way to start a new year than by reading a good book," Stierheim said. "Our monthly selections are quality reading materials that young readers and their families can read throughout the year."

Recommended by the district's reading and media specialists, these selections are to hone reading skills at various grade levels and are ideal for parents and children to read together. January's selections are:

JANUARY'S THEME - AUTHOR STUDY

Kindergarten - Grade 2

How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight? by Jane Yolen

Grade 3 - Grade 5

Encounter by Jane Yolen

Middle School

Briar Rose by Jane Yolen

Senior High/Adult

Kindred by Octavia E. Butler

Multilingual Selection

La Travesía/The Crossing by Rodolfo Otero (Spanish, Senior High)

The Books of the Month and JUST READ are part of the School Board's Comprehensive Reading Plan implemented in 1998 to ensure all students read at grade level by grade 3.

Recent successes, such as the district's 10-point increase in the third-grade reading comprehension median percentile score on the Stanford Achievement Test, prompted the Board to expand the plan another three years.
January's Books of the Month, as well as reading tips for students and parents, can be accessed online at the district's reading website at
