SUPT. ANNOUNCES JUNE'S BOOKS OF THE MONTH

June 3, 2002

Miami-Dade's Superintendent of Schools Merrett R. Stierheim today announced June's Books of the Month, in conjunction with the school district's successful JUST READ campaign to encourage reading.

"Our monthly selections are quality reading materials that young readers and their families can read throughout the year," said Stierheim.

Recommended by the district's reading and media specialists, these selections are to hone reading skills at various grade levels. June's selections are:

JUNE'S THEME - FLORIDA

Kindergarten - Grade 2

S is for Sunshine: A Florida Alphabet by Carol Crane

Grade 3 - Grade 5

The Everglades by Jean Craighead George

Middle School

Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo

Senior High/Adult

The Everglades: River of Grass by Marjory Stoneman Douglas

Multilingual Selection

Anba Mapou A by Jan Mapou (Haitian-Creole, Senior High/Adult)

The Books of the Month and JUST READ are part of the School Board's Comprehensive Reading Plan implemented in 1998 to ensure all students read at grade level by grade 3. Improved student test scores in reading comprehension prompted the Board to expand the plan in 2001 for another three years.

June's Books of the Month, as well as reading tips for students and parents, can be accessed online at the district's reading website [www.dade.k12.fl.us/inst/lms/index.htm]. Monthly reading selections are available at school libraries.
