HOUSING DEVELOPERS CONVEY 20-ACRE TRACT FOR PUBLIC HIGH
SCHOOL IN DORAL AREA
November 14, 2002
Century Homebuilders and the West Dade Federation of
Homeowners Associations have agreed to convey a 20-acre
tract to the Miami-Dade School Board for a 2,000-student
high school to be built in western Miami-Dade's Doral
community.
Century Homebuilders will provide the land for the high
school for $1.5 million, an estimated one-third of the
property's fair market value. The high school will be
located on the west side of N.W. 107th Avenue and near N.W.
86th Street, within Century's "Islands at Doral"
development.
"I'm delighted that organizations within the community have
been able to work together to make this agreement become a
reality," said School Board Member Frank J. Bolaños,
who represents District 5 where the land is located. "The
school district has been looking for land in this area for a
long time, but finding tracts large enough for schools is
difficult."
Schools Superintendent Merrett R. Stierheim says, "This
accord has the potential to save the school system millions
of dollars. It's a solution that will benefit all
stakeholders."
Century Homebuilders President Sergio Pino called the
agreement "a prime example of how the development community
can help meet its social responsibilities to the communities
in which they build, through collaborative initiatives with
the School Board."
Jesse Jones of the West Dade Federation credits recently
adopted legislation that gives local public school districts
greater flexibility to build schools on smaller parcels of
land. He praised the announcement that "culminates years of
effort by many in this deserving community to ensure the
construction of a public high school in Doral."
The transaction marks the second land purchase by the
Miami-Dade school district since new management was
installed in Facilities Planning and the creation of the
School Board's Land Acquisition and Facilities Advisory
Board, a group of community leaders charged with the review
of the district's construction and land purchase
programs.
The school will serve the burgeoning community of Doral, now
served by Miami Springs Senior High School.
