The Oracle Internet
Academy was created by the Oracle Corporation to give
students an advantage in the information technology field.
It is a two-year program during which students learn data
modeling, SQL and Java programming. Students have the
opportunity to take the same industry-level certification
exams given to adults. Instructors are trained by Oracle in
California for two weeks each summer over a two-year
period. ### 02-AMC184/JJS

MIAMI HIGH TEAM PLACES THIRD IN INTERNATIONAL COMPUTER
COMPETITION
February 4, 2002
Miami Senior High's Oracle Internet Academy team placed
third in the second annual Student Data Modeling
Competition. The team's members, Javier Hernandez, Kevin
Lam and Tim Roach are all 11th graders.
The international contest drew more than 60 teams from as
far away as South Africa, Hong Kong and the United Kingdom.
Students designed and justified a data model based on a
scenario provided by Oracle. They analyzed narrative, memos,
and letters of a fictitious company to determine how the
data was related and the company's storage needs.
"The contest is a 100 percent student endeavor," said Miami
High OIA Instructor, Barbara Quintero. "Instructors are not
permitted to help in any way. It was complex, but students
rose to the challenge. We are all extremely proud of
them."
