SUPT. ANNOUNCES SEPTEMBER'S BOOKS OF THE MONTH

September 10, 2002 - REVISED

To help kick off the new school year, Miami-Dade's Superintendent of Schools Merrett R. Stierheim announced September's Books of the Month, in conjunction with the school district's successful JUST READ campaign to encourage reading.

"Our September selections are quality reading materials that young readers and their families can read during the first month of school," said Stierheim. "Be on the look out for new reading selections to be announced each month to keep student reading momentum going."

Recommended by the district's reading and media specialists, these selections are to hone reading skills at various grade levels. September's selections are:

:

SEPTEMBER'S THEME - ADVENTURES

Kindergarten - Grade 2

Magic Tree House Series by Mary Pope Osborne

Grade 3 - Grade 5

Jason's Gold by Will Hobbs

Middle School

Far North by Will Hobbs

Senior High/Adult

Into the Wild by Jon Krankauer

Multilingual Selection

Deblo Zabèl Bobori by Pauris Jean Baptise

The Books of the Month and JUST READ are part of the School Board's Comprehensive Reading Plan implemented in 1998 to ensure all students read at grade level by grade 3. Improved student test scores in reading comprehension prompted the Board to expand the plan in 2001 for another three years and to expand an ambitious reading intervention program to some middle schools and high schools.

Septembers' Books of the Month, as well as reading tips for students and parents, can be accessed online at the district's reading website [
