'STOP DAY' TO BE OBSERVED APRIL 19

April 17, 2002

Miami-Dade County Public Schools will recognize Stop Day on Friday, April 19.

Stop Day, an initiative of the Miami-Dade County School Board, is a state-wide effort to get every child and parent in Florida to stop to reflect on those who have suffered from violence, and resolve to do something to make their schools, neighborhoods, and homes safe.

The center for this year's activities will be Norland Middle School, 1235 N.W. 192 Terrace. A 9 a.m. program will include a candlelight ceremony by members of the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project to honor victims of violence, a presentation by Youth Crime Watch of Miami-Dade Education Director Joel Mesa, and a keynote speech by School Board Member Robert Ingram.

Miami-Dade Schools Police representatives will speak about their efforts to foster better police-youth relations, a project they have undertaken with the assistance of the Role Models Project.

At 9:30 a.m., all public schools county-wide will pause to view a video about Stop Day, with presentations by School Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman, State Representative Frederica S. Wilson, and Superintendent of Schools Merrett R. Stierheim, who will lead students in the Stop Day pledge.
