SUMMER SCHOOL MODIFICATIONS EXPECTED TO SAVE $8 MILLION

July 2, 2002

Modifications to Miami-Dade County Public Schools' Summer School session are expected to save the school district approximately $8 million this year. An agreement for the modifications was reached following talks between school district officials and labor representatives. Highlights of the plan include:

  • All Exceptional Student Education (ESE) paraprofessionals will be hired as hourly employees under an Individuals with Disabilities Education Act grant.

  • Clerical support will be reduced.

  • Class size will be maintained at the same level as 2001. Students must be physically present by Tuesday, July 9, 2002, or they will not be permitted to enroll for the duration of the 2002 Summer School session (except for ESE students with an Individual Educational Plan requiring such attendance).

  • Special area allocation will be limited, reducing course offerings in elementary Art, Music, Physical Education, Spanish S/SL and Technology.
