M-DCPS STUDENTS RECOGNIZED BY SUNSHINE STATE SCHOLARS
PROGRAM
February 6, 2002
Two Miami-Dade County Public Schools students have been
recognized by the Sunshine State Scholars Recognition
Program.
Xiaolong Zhou, a senior at Miami Palmetto Senior High
School, was named a finalist receiving the highest score in
the written competition held in January. He will attend the
final competition in Tallahassee in March. Jesse Summers, a
senior at MAST Academy, was named first alternate.
The six regional scholars will be given a topic for a
project that they must prepare and bring with them to
present at the finals. Each project has as its focus a
serious societal issue involving higher-level mathematics
and science content. Scholars must prepare both a written
component and an oral presentation for a panel of
judges.
The Sunshine State Scholars Recognition Program is a
statewide mathematics and science competition for high
school seniors in Florida that began in 1998. It is designed
to recognize students, teachers and schools that have
achieved excellence in mathematics and science by building
on skills described in the Sunshine State Standards.
