TREASURE ISLAND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL HEALTH ADVISORY UPDATE November 27, 2002 On Friday, Nov. 22, Miami-Dade County Health Department officials completed a preliminary tuberculosis contact investigation at Treasure Island Elementary School. The investigation came after a student at the school was diagnosed with active tuberculosis (TB). Results reported by the health department on Monday, Nov. 25, showed a rate of approximately 20 percent positive skin tests among the 100 individuals who were tested. That percentage falls within the expected range for a population whose members were born mainly outside the United States. Each of the individuals who tested positive will be given a chest x-ray at the health department next week to help determine if further treatment is necessary. The health department also concluded that there is no need for additional tuberculosis testing at the school at this time.
