Wed., Aug. 17, 2005 M-DCPS TEACHERS GET PAY RAISES
MIAMI – For the first time in more than a decade, Miami-Dade County Public Schools teachers are going back to school with pay raises. The School Board’s approval today of a new, one-year contract between the District and United Teachers of Dade (UTD), provides all teachers with a substantial salary increase averaging $1,396. It also moves teachers up one step on the 22-level salary ladder. The average teacher salary is now $48,307 – up from $46,912 last year. A combination of step raises and enhancements to the first eight steps on the salary schedule means that teachers who are early in their careers will receive raises of between $800 and $1,100 for the coming year. The new salary schedule also takes an important first step toward increasing salaries of less-experienced teachers. For example, the starting salary for new teachers will rise to $34,200 from $33,275. Teachers at the top end of the scale will receive raises of $900 for 10-month employees and $1,080 for 12-month employees. Teachers with advanced degrees would continue to receive the same bonuses: $3,000 a year for a master’s degree, $5,000 for a specialist’s degree and $7,000 for a Ph.D. All teachers will see their increases in September with retroactive raises to the first day of work in the school year. The District also agreed to bear the full costs of the 2 percent premium increases for health care for a second consecutive year, as well as maintaining the same rates for employees’ family members. # # # 005-LJG/030/JAA |
