PRIZE-WINNING COLUMNIST, AUTHOR TO LAUNCH
PARENT ACADEMY LECTURE SERIES

MIAMI—An evening with Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Leonard Pitts, Jr. will mark the premiere of The Parent Academy’s Signature Lecture Series, Aug. 23, 6:30-9 p.m., at Parrot Jungle Island, 1111 Parrot Jungle Trail.

The free event is one of the first offerings of The Parent Academy, a landmark venture of Miami-Dade County Public Schools to engage and equip parents for meaningful involvement in their children’s education. The Parent Academy debuts this fall with more than 200 free classes at more than 80 sites across Miami-Dade.

Those attending the event will have the opportunity to register for such classes in The Parent Academy’s first, August-December term as Miami-Dade County Public Schools 101, Homework Tips, and Child Development.

A columnist and critic with The Miami Herald since 1991 and author of Becoming Dad: Black Men and the Journey to Fatherhood, Pitts won the Pulitzer Prize for commentary in 2004. His syndicated column appears in more than 150 daily newspapers nationwide.

A 6:30 p.m. dessert reception, courtesy of Parrot Jungle Island, will precede Pitts’s presentation, which starts 7:30 p.m.

Free babysitting will be available on-site for children ages 4-12.

Parking will be available for $2 per car.

Free transportation, courtesy of Miami-Dade Transit, will be available from six locations across the county. Buses will depart at 5:30 p.m. sharp from, and return at 9:30 p.m. to, the following Miami-Dade public schools:

  • American Senior High,18350 N.W. 67th Ave.
  • North Miami Beach Senior High, 1247 N.E. 167th St. 
  • Miami Northwestern Senior High, 1100 N.W. 71st St.
  • Kinloch Park Middle, 4340 N.W. Third St.
  • Southwest Miami Senior High, 8855 S.W. 50th Terrace; and
  • Mays Middle, 11700 S.W. 216th St.
