M-DCPS Wins Three State Grant Awards to Develop Career Academies MIAMI – Miami-Dade County Public Schools has been awarded two of 49 statewide grants from the Department of Education’s first-ever SUCCEED Florida Career Education Grants. Under the Career Path Programs initiative, the grants of $160,000 each will be used to design career academies in the areas of information technology and health and medical science at Miami Edison Senior High School. The school district also received one of 17 nursing grants awarded in the state to implement the SUCCEED Florida – Nursing Grant. M-DCPS was the only school district to receive this grant, which totals $427,500. The SUCCEED Florida Grant program, created by the 2005 Florida Legislature, is awarding $21 million in grants to public and private secondary and post-secondary institutions to support new or expanding programs in nursing education and teacher certification, and to plan and implement career academies. The grants are part of the Department of Education’s efforts to expand career academies in high schools, align career education with industry standards and workforce demands, and expand options for students to continue their education and enter the workplace. # # # 005-LJG/044/TEL |
