CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH DONATES $8.5 MILLION TO M-DCPS FOR
LAND ACQUISITION FOR NEW K-8 CENTER
MIAMI – School-aged children from Sunny Isles will no longer have to cross to the mainland to go school, thanks to an agreement between Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the City of Sunny Isles Beach.
The city’s donation of $8.5 million to M-DCPS will go towards the purchase of land to build a new K-8 Center within Sunny Isles that will offer relief to three overcrowded schools: Highland Oaks Middle, Virginia A. Boone/Highland Oaks Elementary, and Ruth K. Broad/Bay Harbor Elementary schools.
“This agreement supports our commitment to working closely with municipalities, in this case to offer our students convenient access to schools, and will go far in building a cooperative relationship between the school district and the City of Sunny Isles Beach,” said Superintendent of Schools Rudolph F. “Rudy” Crew.
The city originally planned to donate the land, located at N.E 182 Drive and Atlantic Blvd., to the school system. But after unsuccessful attempts to purchase or use eminent domain to acquire the land, officials agreed instead to donate $8.5 million towards the District’s purchase of the land. The city has also agreed to let the school use an adjacent public park for recreational purposes and will close a portion of a street to improve access between the school and park.
