CARIBBEAN ELEMENTARY TO RECEIVE $65,000 BOOK DONATION MIAMI – As part of Miami-Dade’s Adopt-a-School program, Caribbean Elementary School will receive an early holiday gift: $65,000 in Spanish books and materials from Santillana USA Publishing Company. Donated books will include Spanish-language textbooks, language-learning materials and Spanish-language literature for elementary students. “We are trying to build our Extended Foreign Language program and hope this will make our students more literate-rich in Spanish,” said Caribbean Elementary Principal Peter Cabrera. “These materials will make our students more viable in a global market.” The books can be used in dual-immersion classes as well as in the media center. A helpful set of bilingual workbooks discusses art, biography, poetry, theater and Spanish-speaking countries. The donation also includes teacher training on the materials. “We’re happy to participate in this program because our objectives are the same - teaching and learning,” said Santillana USA Vice President of School Division Stephen Marban. “We support Dr. Crew and the students of South Florida.” Santillana USA is a subsidiary of the largest educational publisher in the Spanish-speaking world. The publisher offers high quality second-language instructional materials and children’s literature. Santillana USA also offers materials in Portuguese and Haitian-Creole.
