GOVERNOR HONORS TWO M-DCPS STUDENTS FOR
HISPANIC HERITAGE ESSAYS

MIAMI – Gov. Jeb Bush honored two Miami-Dade County Public Schools students for their winning entries in the Governor’s Hispanic Heritage Essay contest last night at Bongo’s Cuban Café in downtown Miami.

Michelle Khouri, a senior at Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School, won for her essay detailing her quest to embrace her multi-cultural background and share that knowledge with others. Khouri is a moderator and panelist for the National Conference for Community and Justice, a student-run organization dedicated to ending prejudice through dialogue. She enjoys singing and acting, and plans to pursue a career in communications.

Stacey Lezcano, a fifth grade student at North Twin Lakes Elementary School, won for her essay about how the Spanish language unites Hispanics from different countries. Lezcano entered kindergarten speaking only Spanish, but by first grade was in advanced classes. She is now in the gifted program and active in the Principal’s Chorus.

The winners received a four-year college tuition scholarship through the Florida Prepaid College Foundation and a free computer.

The essays will be posted online at www.floridahispanicheritage.com.
