M-DCPS TEACHER NAMED TO 2005 ALL-USA TEACHER TEAM
BY USA TODAY
MIAMI – Miami Senior High School teacher Joseph Underwood was named to the 2005 All-USA Teacher Team by USA Today. He is one of two teachers selected from Florida.
Underwood, a 21-year teaching veteran, heads the school’s Arts Related Technology for Entertainment (ARTEC) program, which includes TV production, moviemaking and entertainment law. He has raised more than $350,000 in grants for studio equipment allowing his students to videotape and film school activities as well as learn scriptwriting, film and video editing, interviewing and computer graphics.
“Every time I tried to do something in my life, there was someone behind me who said, ‘You can do this. I will get you what you need to succeed.’ I want to be that person for my students,” said Underwood.
Each October, USA Today honors teachers and instructional teams from exceptional K-12 educators across the nation. A nationwide panel of judges consisting of nominees selects all-USA Teacher Team members. Students, administrators, parents, fellow teachers and family members nominate educators who were then asked how they meet their students’ and schools’ needs. The winners received $2,500 for their school and $500 for themselves.
