MIAMI-DADE PUBLIC SCHOOLS IDENTIFIES WILMA MAKE-UP DAYS

MIAMI – Miami-Dade County Public Schools plans to replace teacher planning days in December, February and March with regular school days, use Presidents Day as a school day, and extend the end of the school year by two days to make up for days lost to Hurricane Wilma.

The proposal, which was developed in conjunction with unions representing the District’s employees, must be approved on an emergency basis by the School Board at its Nov. 16 meeting.

The dates proposed as make-up days for most schools are:

  • Dec. 16, 2005 (Teacher planning day)
  • Feb. 17, 2006 (Teacher planning day)
  • Feb. 20, 2006 (Presidents Day holiday)
  • March 17, 2006 (Teacher planning day)
  • May 25, 2006 (Teacher planning day after last day of school for students)
  • May 26, 2005 (Teacher planning day after last day of school for students)

For the 39 schools in the School Improvement Zone, which all have an extended school year, the proposed make-up days are:

  • Dec. 16, 2005 (Teacher planning day)
  • Feb. 17, 2006 (Teacher planning day)
  • Feb. 20, 2006 (Presidents Day holiday)
  • March 17, 2006 (Teacher planning day)
  • May 30, 2006 (Teacher planning day after last day of school for students)
  • May 31, 2005 (Teacher planning day after last day of school for students)

In all, 12 school days have been lost to the three hurricanes that have hit South Florida this year. The District will ask the Florida Department of Education to waive some of the lost days, as it did for school systems impacted by last year’s storms, so long as the minimum number of required hours of instruction are carried out.
