SCHOOL BOARD TO REVIEW SECONDARY REFORM

MIAMI – Important parts of the ambitious secondary school reform that Superintendent Rudolph F. “Rudy” Crew has launched across Miami-Dade County can already be seen in a number of programs in the District, according to a report that will be reviewed by the School Board Wednesday.

The report, “Terms of Engagement,” highlights 22 programs that exhibit key elements of the secondary reform framework approved by the School Board last March. These include: personalized learning environments, academic engagement of all students, empowered educators, accountable leaders, engaged community and youth, and an integrated system of high standards, curriculum, instruction, assessments and supports.

The framework, adapted by the Secondary School Reform Committee and developed by the National High School Alliance, was created to enable a smooth transition to middle and high school as well as to promote a safe and challenging environment for learning.

Programs to be highlighted include the following:

  • American Marketing, Management and Sports Entertainment Academy at American Senior High School offers a comprehensive education that prepares students for real-world experiences in the sports industry.
  • The Fashion Design Magnet at Design & Architecture Senior High School teaches figure drawing and fashion illustration for technical and commercial purposes, and equips students to create original clothing and fashion accessories.
  • Biomedical and Environmental Agriculture Technology Program at John F. Kennedy Middle School introduces students to careers in biotechnology and environmental sciences.

The selected programs reflect best practices that highlight the application of data-driven decisions; strong, positive leadership; and the dedication of stakeholders determined to support students in increasingly high performing learning environments.

Every middle and high school in Miami-Dade County will implement the secondary reform framework beginning next school year. Schools are taking this year to plan how best to improve their offerings and practices.
