HOMESTEAD SENIOR HIGH JUNIOR WINS
BLACK HISTORY MONTH
ESSAY CONTEST
MIAMI - Khaleah
Ann Evelyn, an 11th-grader at Homestead Senior High School,
is the high school category winner of Florida's 2005 Black
History Month essay contest. Her essay, "Apples of Gold," is
a literary ode to the teacher who has influenced and
inspired her life.
More than 4,500 essays were submitted to the competition,
each one answering the question, "What impact has an
African-American educator from Florida had on my life?"
Khaleah's essay paid tribute to her teacher, Kifimbo
Holloway. She credits Ms. Holloway with opening her mind and
teaching her secrets of life that have played a central role
in her journey of self-discovery.
Her winning essay has earned her a four-year tuition
scholarship sponsored by the Florida Prepaid College
Foundation to any Florida college or university, as well as
a Hewlett Packard computer.
Khaleah is an honors student who currently serves as her
school's Student Council Junior Vice President. She is a
member of the City of Homestead Mayor's Youth Council and
the Aerospace Magnet program. She serves as a reading mentor
with the Teen Trendsetter Reading Mentor program. She hopes
to attend either the University of Florida or Florida State
University and plans to triple-major in International
Business, Global Studies and Political Science.
