M-DCPS RANKS THIRD IN NATION FOR NUMBER OF
BOARD CERTIFIED TEACHERS

MIAMI – One hundred eighty-eight Miami-Dade County Public Schools teachers were recognized by the School Board Wednesday for earning National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification. With the new crop of Board-certified teachers, Miami-Dade County ranks third in the nation with 793 Board-certified educators. Eleven Miami-Dade teachers were recognized in early and middle childhood literacy, a new category for the National Board.

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards oversees the rigorous certification process. Certification candidates must complete 150 to 200 hours of intensive, reflective and analytical writing activities, as well as videotaping of classroom instruction. They must also undergo an intensive written assessment, comprised of six 30-minute essay responses discussing effective teaching practices and content knowledge.

Eighteen years ago, the National Board was created as a nonpartisan, independent and nonprofit organization. Its mission is to establish rigorous standards embodying what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do, develop and operate a national voluntary system to assess and certify teachers who meet those standards and advance related education reform to improve student learning in American schools.
