CITIGROUP CHAIRMAN SANFORD I. WEILL TO APPEAR
AT MIAMI JACKSON SENIOR HIGH TO PROMOTE CAREER ACADEMIES

WHO: Sanford I. Weill, chairman of the global financial services powerhouse Citigroup, will talk with students from across Miami-Dade County Public Schools about local career academies in finance, tourism and hospitality industries and information technology and with regional business leaders about supporting the academies.  Mr. Weill helped create the first Academy of Finance in New York City 25 years ago, and chairs the board of the National Academy Foundation, which has helped launch more than 600 career academies across the country.

Superintendent Rudolph F. “Rudy” Crew will discuss the secondary school reform M-DCPS has begun and the ways in which career academies epitomize the application of academic learning to “real world” demands that is central to that effort.

WHAT: Career academies are small, career-themed learning communities in which students interact with educators and their business partners connect classroom study to industry practices.  Academy students take part in extended internships and can earn college credit while in high school.  M-DCPS has more than 40,000 students enrolled in academies across the county.

WHEN: Wednesday, April 20, beginning at 11:45 a.m.  Mr. Weill and Dr. Crew will be available for interviews after the meeting with students.

WHERE: Miami Jackson Senior High School auditorium, 1751 N.W. 36th St., Miami.
