SCHOOL BOARD ADOPTS DISTRICT GOALS,
MOVES ONE STEP CLOSER TO COMPLETING STRATEGIC PLAN

MIAMI – Miami-Dade County Public Schools is one step closer to completing a plan for the next three years with the School Board’s approval yesterday of the vision, mission, core values and goals associated with the 2005-2008 District Strategic Plan.

At a January 2005 strategic planning workshop for Board Members, the Superintendent and his Cabinet, the district’s vision, mission and core values were revisited, and district goals for 2005-2008 were developed. This was the first step in completing the 2005-2008 District Strategic Plan. To ensure that the school district’s budget supports the goals identified in the strategic plan, both the strategic planning and budget development processes will occur concurrently. These goals and priorities will become the foundation for all future budgeting activities and will drive planning and funding for the next three years.

The following are the vision, mission, core values and goals for the 2005-2008 Strategic Plan:

Vision: We are committed to providing educational excellence for all.

Mission: We provide the highest quality education so that all of our students are empowered to lead productive and fulfilling lives as lifelong learners and responsible citizens.

Core Values:

  • Excellence – We pursue the highest standards in academic achievement and organizational performance.
  • Integrity – We build positive relationships through honesty, respect and compassion, which enhance the self-esteem, safety and well being of our students, families and staff.
  • Equity – We foster an environment that serves all students and aspires to eliminate the achievement gap.
  • Citizenship – We honor the diversity of our community by working as a team to ensure the educational successes of all our students and recognize that our obligations go beyond our professional responsibilities to promote democratic principles.

Goals:

  • Ensure achievement of high academic standards by all students.
  • Develop our students so that they are able to successfully compete in the global economy.
  • Actively engage family and community members to become partners in raising and maintaining high student achievement.
  • Reform business practices to ensure efficiency, effectiveness and high ethical standards.
  • Recruit, develop and retain high-performing, diverse and motivated faculty and staff.

The next step in this process will be to create district objectives and a way to measure these. Once the objectives and their respective metrics have been developed, district staff will develop more specific function plans for school district departments, which will be presented to the School Board at its April meeting.
