M-DCPS CELEBRATES AMERICAN HEART MONTH MIAMI – Miami-Dade County Public Schools honors American Heart Month during February with special programs. Celebrated since 1963, American Heart Month activities raise funds for research and awareness and passes along information about heart disease and stroke. Ada Merritt Elementary School, 600 S.W. Third St., will commemorate American Heart Month with a unique program on Feb. 14 from 9-10 a.m. Kindergartners and their parents will have a healthy breakfast and discuss healthy living options. The event will be capped off with children giving their parents valentines, sending a message to take care of their hearts. American Heart Month culminates with National Woman’s Heart Day Health Fair on Feb. 18 from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at the James L. Knight Center, 400 S.E. Second Ave. Activities include free heart-health screenings, health and fitness counseling, heart-healthy cooking demonstrations and more. Heart disease is the leading killer of women. The district’s Department of Food and Nutrition is promoting healthy eating by offering schools special vegetarian pizza with a whole-wheat crust. The department promotes excellence in food and nutrition services as an integral part of education. The district recognizes the relationship between good nutrition with the capacity of children to learn and develop, and the prevention of chronic disease.
