MIAMI DOUGLAS MACARTHUR SOUTH SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL RECEIVES GRANT FROM FLDOE

MIAMI— Miami Douglas MacArthur South Senior High School has received a $52,092 grant from the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) to enhance and expand its existing service learning project with ArtSouth.

This program allows students to spend 30 hours per month at ArtSouth, studying under resident artists and learning traditionally native art processes to culturally enrich historic downtown Homestead. The students design, construct, install and promote their own artwork at fairs, exhibits, gallery shows and festivals throughout the community.

ArtSouth is an artist community that hosts concerts, theatrical performances and dance performances and works to provide affordable working, living, learning, teaching, and exhibiting space for emerging and established artists. Through educational programs, communication, outreach and interaction with the public by resident studio artists, ArtSouth hopes to aid in the cultural enhancement of the Homestead and south Miami-Dade area.

The FLDOE grant will be applied toward supplies, professional and technical services, travel and meals, and other expenses.

For additional information, contact MacArthur South Principal Steve Rummel at 305-279-5422.
