MDCPS EDUCATOR AWARDED PRESTIGIOUS
MILKEN EDUCATOR AWARD

MIAMI —Eva Hernandez, a kindergarten teacher at Mae M. Walters Elementary School, got the shock of her life when she was awarded the prestigious Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award and $25,000 during a surprise ceremony at the school Friday. She is one of 100 teachers nationwide to receive the coveted award this year.

Hernandez received her honor during a school assembly. Florida Department of Education Commissioner John Winn and Milken Family Foundation Vice President Lew Solmon were on hand to recognize Hernandez on her accomplishment.

Hernandez promotes critical thinking throughout coursework. She uses hands-on activities in science and math and incorporates cooperative learning in math as a motivational tool. In addition to her classroom responsibilities, she mentors new teachers, offers parent workshops, and teaches Saturday and after-school programs.

Milken Educators receive an unrestricted financial award of $25,000 and professional development opportunities, as well as public recognition. Candidates are selected based on outstanding instructional classroom, school and professional practices, strong professional and policy leadership potential, and inspiring motivational impact on students, colleagues and community.

The Milken Family Foundation has been helping people through their philanthropic works for 22 years. The California-based foundation supports efforts in medical research and education.
