PARENTS, CHILDREN, ONE STEP CLOSER TO SUCCESS AS

PLANS FOR THE PARENT ACADEMY MOVE FORWARD

MIAMI – The Miami-Dade County School Board today approved a sweeping plan to help parents and family members support and foster their children’s education.

Aimed at helping parents take an active role in their children’s education, The Parent Academy is an ambitious, community-wide partnership that will focus on building parents’ knowledge and skills so that they in turn can bolster their children’s academic and life successes. The Academy’s courses will be divided into three categories:

  • Core Courses: to help parents further their skills and knowledge to guide their children’s education effectively
  • Growth Courses: to help parents increase their capacity to help themselves and, therefore, their children
  • Certification Courses: to help parents extend their employability skills and employment prospects by taking certified programs or training

Superintendent Rudolph F. “Rudy” Crew’s report, Building the Future One Parent at a Time: A Report of Partnership, Process and Progress, details the planning to date as well as the work that will be completed in the coming months to ensure the Academy’s opening with the start of the school year in August.

The first year of The Parent Academy, a starting point for future success, is coming to life through the planning and commitment of more than 100 stakeholders, from parents to members of the business community and concerned citizens. It also includes partnerships with seven colleges and universities, 11 community-based organizations and three county/municipal governments. Courses, resources and other opportunities will be offered at more than 80 locations, including public libraries, college and university campuses and migrant farm-worker camps. Plans also are underway to provide childcare, transportation and financial assistance for materials, supplies and certification programs.
