VOLUNTARY PREKINDERGARTEN EVENTS WILL ALLOW PARENTS
TO PROVE CHILDREN’S ELIGIBILITY

MIAMI— Parents who want to take advantage of the state’s new, free Voluntary PreKindergarten Program need to prove that their children are eligible for the classes.  Proving eligibility is different than actually enrolling a four-year-old in pre-kindergarten, and must be done first.

On Saturday, June 4, and Saturday, June 11, parents will be able to prove their children’s eligibility at 30 schools across Miami-Dade County.  The schools will be open to consider eligibility from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.  A list of the schools is attached below, and also can be found at the Miami-Dade County Public Schools website, www.dadeschools.net. Parents also will be able to prove eligibility at these schools during regular school hours.

To be eligible for next school year, a student must be a Florida resident and must be four years old on or before September 1, 2005.

To prove eligibility, parents must bring a copy of their child’s birth certificate and one document proving residency.  Examples of residency documents are an electric or water bill, a lease or rental agreement with a landlord, a bank statement, a pay stub that includes an address, a government document that shows an address, or an insurance policy.  Post office boxes do not qualify as addresses for this purpose.

Once a child’s eligibility is confirmed, a parent will receive a certificate of eligibility for voluntary prekindergarten that will permit the child to be enrolled.  Enrollment will take place later in June.  Children who do not have an eligibility certificate will not be able to enroll later.
