SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT ZONE OFFERS PARENTS
EXCITING EDUCATIONAL CLASSES

MIAMI — The School Improvement Zone is offering its parents a chance for personal, professional and educational growth through the One-School Community/One-School Goal Parent Institute. The four-month program will run April 4-July 22.

Parents will be able to sign up for classes to learn English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and computer skills, receive vocational training, or earn a high school graduate equivalency diploma (GED). A special class in family literacy will also be available to help parents help their children succeed in school.

The Parent Institute participants will receive a $50 stipend per week of attendance, a packet of family self-help materials, and a four-month newspaper subscription. Participants will qualify to attend a parent conference and luncheon. Transportation will be provided for this conference.

The School Improvement Zone is a group of 39 low-performing Miami-Dade public schools. Students receive intensive support and a special academic program that places a strong emphasis on literacy. They benefit from uniform, high quality teaching materials at every elementary, middle and senior high school. The Zone school day has been extended by one hour and the current school year by five days.

For more information contact Dr. Ana Maria Lopez-Ochoa, administrative director, School Improvement Zone, at 305-995-2367 or Roberta C. Daniels, district supervisor, School Improvement Zone, at 305-995-1702.
