M-DCPS, GREATER MIAMI CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PARTNER IN
FUTURE EXECUTIVES PROGRAM

MIAMI – High school students in Miami-Dade County will be getting help in career planning and business behavior from some of the best professionals in town, thanks to an innovative partnership between Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) and the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce (GMCC). The new alliance has resulted in the creation of the Future Executives Program, which will be implemented into the 11 schools that are piloting the District’s Secondary School Reform (SSR) Initiative.

The program will include “Tools for Success” lessons that will be implemented in all ninth grades in the 11 SSR schools. These lessons and activities will address issues relating to transition, such as postsecondary and career planning; work-related behavior; and manners, ethics and conflict resolution.

In addition, Future Executives clubs will be established at the schools, and through these, GMCC will organize two activities during the current school year: a pre-holiday networking event in mid-December and a mini goals conference in May of 2007. Students also will have the opportunity to attend the actual GMCC Goals Conference in June of 2007.

The establishment of this program illustrates the District’s commitment to engaging businesses and community stakeholders in children’s education. Last year, the District and City of Miami formed an education compact with the goal of aligning their resources better to ensure that children are armed with the tools they need to succeed in school and beyond.
